LENAWEE CO. — The Lenawee County Health Department is reminding residents that some of the biggest germ hotspots may be hiding in plain sight.

According to the county’s Healthy Lenawee update, areas like kitchen sponges and cutting boards, bathroom faucet handles, and even TV remotes and game controllers can carry high levels of bacteria.

The department recommends microwaving damp kitchen sponges for one minute, disinfecting handles and switches regularly, and replacing toothbrushes every three to four months.

It also advises wiping down phones, key fobs and steering wheels at least weekly since they often carry germs from outside the home.

Officials say frequent handwashing and keeping up with vaccines are key to staying healthy this season.
