AFD Fire Chief Aric Massingill Retires

ADRIAN — Adrian Fire Chief Aric Massingill has announced his retirement, according to the City of Adrian.

Chief Massingill has been with the City of Adrian since October 2nd, 2000, and became Fire Chief on June 26th, 2018.

In his role as Fire Chief, Massingill was responsible for directing fire prevention and suppression as well as medical response services, including managing the day-to-day operations of the Fire Department and the supervision of 25 full-time employees.

In 2019, Chief Massingill started the City’s own ambulance service, which allowed the City to add 9 firefighters and paramedics.

Chief Massingill also began the City’s Fire Inspector program in October of 2022, helping to decrease insurance rates for the Fire Department.

In a statement, City Administrator Chad Baugh said that Massingill, “set the course for a modern, professional fire department while honoring its proud traditions, strengthening both emergency response and high-quality ambulance service for our residents.”

Baugh also noted that Massingill was a fourth-generation firefighter and a highly trained emergency manager, saying, “His impact on our community—and on the history of the Adrian Fire Service—will endure.”

Chief Massingill also made a statement of his own, saying in part, “The relationships that have been built and the work that has been done to improve the quality of life in Adrian has been great to be a part of…The recent notification of the Fire Department’s decreased insurance rating is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the Fire Department employees, and I am proud to have been able to work alongside them.”
