ADRIAN — Michigan State University and the Sam Beauford Woodworking Institute in Adrian are partnering to develop the nation’s first non-union mass timber workforce curriculum.

The effort combines MSU’s Construction Management program and Sam Beauford Woodworking Institute’s skilled-trades training to create a pathway for workers in the evolving mass timber and timber framing industries. The curriculum will be part of Sam Beauford Woodworking Institute’s new campus program launching in fall 2027.

Assistant Professor of Construction Management Dr. George Berghorn says the collaboration connects research with workforce education to help Michigan build the skilled labor it needs for sustainable construction.

Sam Beauford Woodworking Institute President Luke Barnett says the goal is to provide practical and employable skills while supporting economic growth.

Curriculum design and accreditation work begin next year, with industry input expected through 2026.
