LANSING — State Representative Jennifer Wortz of Quincy has introduced a bill to protect parents who seek a second medical opinion for their children.

House Bill 5163 would make sure parents aren’t charged with neglect if they follow advice from another licensed healthcare provider. Wortz says parents should feel safe confirming a diagnosis or exploring different treatment options without fear of losing custody.

The legislation comes after reports of parents facing legal action for choosing alternative care recommendations.

House Bill 5163 has been referred to the House Committee on Families and Veterans for review.
