LENAWEE CO. — Doctors in Michigan are warning state lawmakers that many people could lose health care if Congress lets enhanced Affordable Care Act premium tax credits expire at the end of the year.
Members of the Committee to Protect Health Care spoke at a Senate Health Policy Committee hearing.
They said the tax credits have helped people afford marketplace plans since they were expanded in 2021. Enrollment has more than doubled nationwide.
Doctors told senators that if Congress does not act, insurance premiums could rise more than 75% on average. In some rural areas the increase could reach 90%. That change could cause millions of Americans to lose coverage, including thousands in Michigan.
Doctors urged lawmakers to support a resolution from Sen. Kevin Hertel, who represents parts of Macomb County, asking Congress and the president to extend the tax credits permanently.
