MONROE — The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam where callers pretend to be law enforcement officers and demand payment.
Sheriff Troy Goodnough said the department received a report Friday from a victim who was contacted by someone claiming to be “Deputy Corey Jacobs.” The caller told the person they had missed court or failed to appear for jury duty, and threatened arrest unless money was sent.
According to the sheriff, the scammer demanded payment using Bitcoin, gift cards, or electronic cash apps. He emphasized that no law enforcement agency will ever call citizens to demand money or threaten arrest for any reason.
Officials urge everyone to slow down, think before responding, and verify suspicious calls with someone they trust or by contacting local law enforcement directly.
Residents who receive such calls should report them to Monroe County Central Dispatch at 734-243-7070.
