
Don W. Schimmel, age 97, of Onsted MI, passed away on Friday, September 26, 2025, at his home under the care of Elara Caring Hospice. He was born on November 17, 1927, in Philadelphia, PA, the son of the late Wilbur Samuel and Margaret Anna (Zihmer) Schimmel. Don proudly served his country during WWII in the United States Navy. He was the owner and operator of his own business in Romulus, MI for over 30 years.
Don attended St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Onsted, MI. Don was a Lions Club member for many years in Cedarville, MI. He enjoyed boating and was a Vice Commodore of the Le Cheneaux Yacht Club in Cedarville.
Don had many interests including tennis and golf. He was very proud of being a multi-engine, instrument-rated pilot and loved to travel. As a young man, he was a part of an elite General Motors Parade of Progress public relations program. Don was proud of his instrumental role in changing laws to benefit veterans and policies.
Don is survived by his children, Barbara Schimmel Marcum, Donna Schimmel Wright and Mark Glenn (Mary Lee) Schimmel; his grandchildren, Jacquese (Marc) Marcum Miloser, Jaimee (Hugo) Marcum Cardenas, Corey (Mike) Schimmel, Rachel (Todd) Wright, Hilary (Chase) Wright Mitrzyk, and Drew Wright; great-grandchildren Elliana Grace, Adelynne Julia, Arabella Alyse, Marin Victoria, Owynn Marie, Tristan Robert, Georgia Jane, and Trent William, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife and parents, Don was preceded in death by his brother, Glenn Schimmel.
At his request, cremation has taken place. The family will hold a Celebration of life at a later date at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Onsted, MI. Memorial contributions in Don’s honor may be made to St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church or to Hillsdale College. Arrangements are under the care of the Tecumseh Chapel of Handler Funeral Homes.
