n Loving Memory of Ronald Dennis Mangrum

(Affectionately known as “Horsefly” to his friends and coworkers)

Celebrating the life and legacy of Ronald Dennis Mangrum. Surrounded by loved ones at the Mangrum homestead, he was lovingly called home to be with his Savior on September 12, 2025.  Born August 13, 1943, in Paragould, Arkansas, to JB Mangrum and Earlene Russom, Ronald’s story is one of resilience, faith, and unwavering love – a journey that blessed all who knew him. Ronald was named by his mother after her favorite movie star, Ronald Reagan – a mark of her hopes and dreams for her beloved son. Though one of five siblings – Kay Jackson, Henrietta Thompson (Homer), David Mangrum (Jean), Rosann Mangrum, and Brenda Reed – Ronald’s childhood took a different path. He was not raised with his siblings, but instead by his devoted grandparents, Buford and Gladys Mangrum, alongside Lowell Mangrum, his uncle so close in age that they were raised as brothers. This unique upbringing fostered a bond that shaped Ronald’s character and heart.

On December 25, 1961, Ronald married his high school sweetheart and best friend, Fay Beasley. Together, they left the cotton fields of Arkansas behind, moving north to build a new life filled with hope and opportunity. Their love story blossomed into a family of their own. Together they had three beautiful children: Todd Mangrum, Cheryl Paradine (James), Bryan Mangrum (Karla), and honorary daughter Kendra Orick (Forbs). Family was Ronald’s greatest treasure. He was a devoted father, and to his grandchildren – he was their beloved Grandpa a.k.a. Pawpaw. His family included eleven grandchildren – Tyler, Chanel, Adena, Trenton, Meeghan (Shay), Manique (Marcus), Seth, Caleb (Taylor), Brandon (Julia), Shaun (Ashley), and Karlee (Anthony) – and fourteen cherished great-grandchildren. His wisdom, humor, and gentle spirit will forever echo through the generations who lovingly called him Grandpa (Ol’ Papaw).  To his coworkers, Ronald was affectionately known as “Horsefly” a nickname given to him by his dear friend RT, which he wore with pride. Ronald poured his heart into his work at Bohn Aluminum in Adrian, Michigan, for 25 years before continuing his career at Lenawee Stamping, retiring in 2012 after another two decades of loyal service. A true craftsman, he earned his journeyman certification in Maintenance and was respected by all for his dedication and skill.  Ronald’s truest devotion was to his faith; he was a loyal member of the Solid Rock Church of Lenawee for the last 25 years. At 32, after years of gentle encouragement from Fay, Ronald gave his life to Jesus on February 9th, 1975. From that moment, his life became a beacon of light to others. He joyfully shared the Good News, never an opportunity to open his home and heart for Bible studies, prayer meetings, and heartfelt conversations about Jesus. Whether in quiet moments or lively gatherings.

Ronald’s love for the Lord was evident, and he helped lead many to faith through his example. Even after suffering a stroke in 2010, which left him with aphasia and limited speech, Ronald’s spirit never wavered. Though it broke his heart to no longer teach or converse as he once did, his warm presence and open arms continued to welcome new and old members of his church community. He remained a pillar of faith, a true friend, and a gentle encourager.  Ronald’s love for the outdoors was evident in everything he did. He took great pride in caring for his yard, always enjoying mowing and spending time in the fresh air. Over the years, Ronald became well-known for growing large, bountiful gardens – he delighted in tending to his plants and was always generous in sharing the fruits of his labor with friends, family, and neighbors. His green thumb extended even further, as he grew and sold Christmas trees, bringing holiday cheer to many in his community.  Ronald was an avid hunter and fisherman. He found peace and joy in the woods and on the water, cherishing time spent in nature and sharing those experiences with family and friends. His love for the outdoors wasn’t just a hobby, but a way of life – one that fostered deep connections and lasting memories.

When he wasn’t in the garden, on a hunt, or out fishing, Ronald was an enthusiastic sports fan, cheering for the Minnesota Vikings, the St. Louis Cardinals, the Arkansas Razorbacks, and Michigan State. Whether cultivating the land, supporting his favorite teams, or simply enjoying the beauty of nature, Ronald lived each day with enthusiasm and gratitude. Above all, Ronald loved his Savior, his family, and his friends. He ran his race with perseverance, touching hundreds – if not thousands – of lives along the way. As we say goodbye, we rejoice knowing that Ronald is now in the presence of his Lord, hearing the words he longed for: “Well done, good and faithful servant.” His race is finished, but his legacy of faith, love, and kindness endures in all who knew him. We love you, Ronald – Dad, Grandpa, Horsefly, and friend. Until we meet again.
