LANSING — Lawmakers in Lansing have introduced a bipartisan plan to reduce lead risks across Michigan.

The four bills would update the state’s definition of elevated blood lead levels to match the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, require baby food makers to test products for toxic metals, and let the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services enforce federal rules for safe home renovations.

The package also calls for automatic referrals to the Early On program for children under age three who test with high lead levels.

Supporters say these changes will help protect children and families from the harmful effects of lead.

The bills have been sent to the Health Policy Committee for further review.
