JACKSON — State Representative Kathy Schmaltz of Jackson voted this week to support a plan that would stop paychecks for lawmakers and the governor if the state budget is not done on time.

The plan, called House Joint Resolution M, would change the Michigan Constitution. It says if the July 1 budget deadline is missed, pay for the governor and legislators would be paused until a balanced budget is signed into law.

The measure needed two-thirds support in the House. It failed in a 70-to-30 vote. All Republicans voted in favor, while many Democrats voted against it.

Schmaltz said she was disappointed by the outcome but hopes the plan will come up for another vote in the future.
