ADRIAN — State officials are escalating enforcement against an Adrian business for emitting a foul smell.
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy confirmed it issued a violation notice to Veos, the company operating an egg facility on East Maumee Street, on July 23rd of this year.
The EGLE’s Air Quality Division says the building’s odor violates the state’s nuisance odor rule and other air quality permits.
According to Local 4 Detroit, the facility’s previous owners reached an agreement with the Air Quality Division to control the smell, but the agreement did not transfer when Veos purchased the facility in bankruptcy court last year.
Residents claim the smell has been a problem for years, and local business owners say the odor is even driving away customers.
Veos has not provided comment to any news organizations.
EGLE said if Veos violates the latest notice, the facility could face financial penalties.
