Dr. John George Meredith – Hudson

Dr. John George Meredith age 84 of Hudson, passed away Friday, August 8, 2025, at the Country Living of Hillsdale surrounded by his loving family. John was born on December 13, 1940, to Edward and Gertrude (Seibert) Meredith in Evansville, IN. He attended St. Anthony grade school and Mater Dei High School in Evansville. While at Mater Dei, John was a multi-sport distinguished athlete including football, wrestling, and track & field. He was Mater Dei’s All-City football center, led his wrestling team to a city title, and placed third in the Indiana State wrestling finals. John graduated from the University of Evansville, where he played football for four years.

In his early career, John was a teacher and coach in Indianapolis area parochial schools (Scecina Memorial, John F. Kennedy High School). John mentored his young athletes and helped many obtain athletic scholarships and go on to lead a fulfilling life. John completed graduate work in education at Butler University. John was awarded the Mott Scholarship to attend the University of Michigan, where he earned a Ph.D. John then embarked on leading school districts in Oregon, Michigan, and Illinois as Superintendent of Schools. He was an excellent administrator and people leader throughout his career, and devoted his life to educating, coaching, mentoring, and inspiring young people. When he wasn’t working, he enjoyed spending time with family and being outdoors hunting, golfing, and gardening.

John was dedicated to his family. He is survived by his wife Barbara Meredith, his children Kathleen Pearson (Thomas), Christine Reiniche, Chelsea Meredith, Scott Gilpin, Brian Gilpin (Patty), Kelli Schmidt, twelve grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Gertrude Meredith, his sister Sharon Brown, and nephew Mark Brown.

Per John’s request a private funeral has taken place and was laid to rest in Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Hudson. The Family would like to thank the wonderful people at Country Living in Hillsdale for their wonderful care the last few years, they would also like to thank Elara Caring Hospice for their help at the end of John’s life. In Lieu of flowers and with gratitude, memorial contributions maybe be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or to Elara Caring Hospice.
