ADRIAN — Adrian City Engineer Matt Tomaszewski presented an overview of the city’s chip and fog seal program during Monday night’s commission meeting.
The process is used to preserve road surfaces and extend their lifespan by five to seven years.
Tomaszewski said chip and fog sealing costs between $31,000 and $132,000 per mile, compared to $2.5 million for full reconstruction. He said the method helps protect the road base while reducing long-term repair costs.
Residents and commissioners asked about quality control and concerns with gravel and bike safety. Tomaszewski acknowledged the need for improvement in some areas and said street sweeper follow-ups and sealing layers are part of the standard process.
He said heavily traveled roads smooth out faster and that the program allows the city to cover more ground with limited funding.
