JACKSON — Representative Kathy Schmaltz is pushing for state support to modernize a long-running care facility for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Schmaltz and officials with the St. Louis Center testified before a legislative committee this week, advocating for a $6 million state grant to renovate the facility’s skill-building wing.

Located in Chelsea, the St. Louis Center has served Michigan residents for over 65 years, offering residential and educational support. The targeted wing helps adults maintain mental and physical wellness.

The proposed upgrades include accessibility improvements, memory care features, and a Snoezelen Therapy room for sensory needs.

In a press release, Representative Schmaltz said, “There’s no other place like this in the region. This is a chance for the state to step up and be a partner in something that truly changes lives.”

Schmaltz says the changes would help meet growing needs as the population ages and ensure no one is left behind. The grant request is under review by the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor and Economic Opportunity.
