LENAWEE CO. — Lenawee County commissioners approved final construction bids Wednesday for a $1.83 million project to overhaul infrastructure at the Maurice Spear Campus juvenile detention center.

The project is funded through a $1.33 million Juvenile Justice Infrastructure Grant awarded by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. Lenawee County committed an additional $500,000 in local matching funds to complete the work.

The infrastructure upgrades will replace outdated plumbing systems and modernize hygiene facilities at the aging detention facility. Granger Construction submitted the winning bid, with final costs totaling $1,835,000.

The funding breakdown includes $501,806 from the county’s capital improvement contingency fund and the remaining $1.33 million from the state grant.

Construction is expected to begin this year. Officials say the improvements are critical to maintaining safety, functionality, and dignity for youth in detention.
