TECUMSEH — A major downtown streetscape overhaul is underway in Tecumseh as local officials begin planning long-awaited improvements to the city’s core business district.

The current downtown streetscape is more than 30 years old and has developed significant infrastructure issues. Problems include sidewalk damage, sound system failures, irrigation breakdowns, and ongoing sidewalk flooding.

Officials recently selected a design firm to lead the redevelopment process. The firm was chosen through a competitive bid review that evaluated multiple proposals. Local leaders emphasized that this is not a short-term project. The process will span six to eight months and will include community meetings, surveys, public workshops, and regular design reviews.

The goal is to update the downtown area to improve accessibility, safety, and visual appeal while preserving the district’s character. The redevelopment is expected to address key maintenance concerns while enhancing the visitor experience for shoppers, businesses, and event attendees.

Officials said the community will have multiple opportunities to provide input throughout the process. A steering committee will meet regularly with the design firm to track progress and gather feedback.

The project is part of a long-term vision for maintaining and improving Tecumseh’s downtown infrastructure, which has seen increased use through festivals, markets, and special events.

Public updates and participation opportunities will be announced as the project advances.
