LANSING — Michigan officials have announced state tax extension relief for residents and businesses in Lansing, Allegan County, and Baraga County following severe weather and tornadoes on May 15. Eligible taxpayers can request more time to file and pay state taxes without penalties or interest.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer declared a state of emergency in the affected areas to assist with disaster response and recovery. The weather event brought 11 confirmed tornadoes, high winds, flash flooding, and significant property damage. In response, the Michigan Department of Treasury is offering relief to help taxpayers prioritize recovery.
Residents and business owners must actively request tax extension relief through the Michigan Department of Treasury. Requests can be submitted online through the Individual Income Tax eService or Business Taxes eService, by phone, or via U.S. mail. Applicants must provide their name, account number, a description of how they were affected, and a relevant address within one of the declared emergency zones.
Requests by mail should be sent to: Michigan Department of Treasury, Attn: Disaster Tax Relief, Lansing, MI 48922.
Taxpayers who receive preliminary notices before their relief request is processed should call Treasury directly. More information is available at www.michigan.gov/taxes. Affected individuals are also encouraged to consult the IRS for potential federal relief options.
