Sam Beauford Woodworking Campus Expansion

ADRIAN — The Sam Beauford Woodworking Institute may soon expand its footprint at Witt Farm — if the Adrian City Commission agrees to a second land deal.

Founder and President Luke Barnett told commissioners Monday night the school wants to purchase 10 additional acres adjacent to the 22 already approved last fall. He says the added space is critical for their growing campus and new initiatives — including a business incubator, co-working space, and storefront to showcase student work.

That request comes as the city develops a long-range master plan for Witt Farm, funded through Michigan’s SmartZone program.

Commissioners called the Institute exciting, but urged the city to move in a timely and respectful way. Stressing the importance of sticking to the broader plan.

The commission took no vote Monday night but said the proposal will stay on their radar as the city’s planning process continues.
