Lansing, MI – Local State Representative Nancy Jenkins-Arno supports the House Republicans’ plan to direct state funds toward repairing Michigan’s local roads without increasing costs for taxpayers.
The plan will dedicate an additional $3.1 billion annually to infrastructure improvements by reallocating existing funds within the state budget and ensuring that all taxes paid at the pump go directly toward fixing roads.
Bridge Michigan reports that Democrats allege the plan would lead to budgetary shortfalls and cuts in critical services, while Republicans have emphasized their plan funds road repairs without requiring new revenue.
The package passed mostly along party lines, but had as many as seven Democrats voting yes on parts of the package.
The passage of the House plan will likely set the stage for negotiations with Democrats who control the state Senate and with Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer. The Senate has not yet outlined a specific road funding proposal beyond a broad outline Whitmer offered earlier this year.
