Kenneth Edward Brewer, age 92, was born in Dundee, MI, on April 15, 1932, the son of Edward and Eva (Weller) Brewer. He graduated in 1950 from Dundee Community Schools.
As a youngster, Ken started working with his family’s poultry and hatchery business. The Brewer Hatchery sold thousands of baby chickens each spring to local farmers.
Ken met his future wife, Mary Jonas, during the summer of 1953. They were united in marriage on June 18, 1955, in Ida, MI, Mary’s hometown.
Ken continued to work for the poultry farm until the spring of 1962, when he purchased an insurance business from a Petersburg agency. This became the start of a promising venture as the following year, Ken expanded his clientele with the purchase of an insurance agency within the Blissfield area.
In August of 1963, Ken and Mary moved to Blissfield, where Ken operated his insurance business from the front wing of their home. This arrangement went on through 1969 and in January of 1970, Ken moved his business downtown to 103 S. Lane St. where he worked until 1995. He merged with the Blissfield Insurance Agency in January 1996, and two years later he sold his share of the business. Ken continued to work with the Blissfield Insurance Agency through August of 1999. Ken wasn’t ready to settle down and retire, so he spent the next seven years working for various business enterprises.
Ken was a man of many interests and talents. He had a private pilot’s license and flew quite often from 1951 to 1963. He was a member of the Blissfield Kiwanis Club for 15 years and was one of the founding members of the Blissfield Golf League which began in April of 1969. Ken was the league’s secretary for most of the 41 years he was involved with the league, putting away his golf clubs in 2010. Ken stayed active in 3 Blissfield Rich Lanes bowling leagues from 1972 to 2001. For 20 years he was instrumental in making team arrangements (including lodging) for the Michigan State Bowling Tournament; at the peak, this involved 16 different teams. Mary’s help was a vital part in making all this possible. He was a loyal a loyal Detroit Tigers, Lions and Pistons fan; and was sure to watch the PGA golfing events.
In addition to his wife, Mary, Ken is survived by their son, David (Rebecca) Brewer; and grandchildren, Sarah and Nicole Brewer. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Esther Boyce and Carol Clark; and a brother-in-law, Charles Jonas.
