PALMYRA TWP. — A longtime Lenawee County roadside landmark has been destroyed following an act of vandalism earlier this month.

The “Happy Family of Palmyra,” a display of mannequins known for waving at passing drivers along U.S. 223, was found severely damaged. The figures, which had stood for nearly four decades, were torn apart and scattered across the property.

The display was originally created by a local truck driver as a way to bring a sense of connection and encouragement to others on the road, especially long-haul drivers traveling through the area.

Family members say the loss has been difficult for the community, as the installation had become a recognizable and meaningful symbol for many in Lenawee County.

A report has been filed with the Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office.

In response, efforts are now underway to rebuild the display using more durable materials, with community members already expressing interest in supporting the restoration. A GoFundMe has been set up to assist the effort.
