TECUMSEH — The secondhand goods ordinance received initial approval Monday night, adding new licensing requirements for businesses dealing in precious metals and gems in Tecumseh.
City officials said the update came after discovering the city was not aligned with state law.
The ordinance would require dealers to register with the city, undergo background checks, provide fingerprints, and hold purchased items for 10 days before resale. Officials said the measure is intended to improve oversight and assist law enforcement in tracking potentially stolen goods.
Tecumseh Police Chief Jeff Wright says the issue came to light through a local business inquiry.
The measure was approved on first reading. A second reading and final vote are still required before the ordinance takes effect. If adopted, the changes would bring Tecumseh into compliance with state regulations and establish a formal process for businesses dealing in secondhand precious metals.
