LANSING — A new report finds online scams are costing Americans billions of dollars each year, including victims in Michigan.

Researchers with the Consumer Federation of America estimate people across the country lose at least 119-billion dollars annually to online fraud. They say the real number is likely far higher because most scams are never reported.

Federal data show reported fraud losses in Michigan rose about 30 percent between 2023 and 2024.

Experts say many scams begin on social media and can include fake investment offers, phishing attempts, and fraudulent tech-support messages.

Consumers are encouraged to verify companies before sending money, avoid unsolicited offers, and report suspected scams to authorities.
