LANSING — Michigan State Senator Joe Bellino is promoting a proposed ballot initiative that would amend the Michigan Constitution to explicitly require U.S. citizenship to vote in state elections.

Federal and state law already require voters to be U.S. citizens. Undocumented immigrants are not legally allowed to vote, and registering to vote requires affirming citizenship under penalty of law.

Supporters of the proposal say the amendment would add an additional safeguard by placing the requirement directly in the state constitution.

Bellino says organizers collected roughly 750,000 signatures to place the measure on the November ballot.

That was Senator Joe Bellino.
