ALBION — The Albion Department of Public Safety says a police chase Sunday morning led to the arrest of a 44-year-old Albion man after officers say he fled a traffic stop and rammed a patrol vehicle.

Public safety officials say the incident began around 10:02 a.m. March 1 on Haven Road near Veterans Way, when officers attempted to stop a vehicle traveling nearly twice the posted speed limit. Police say the driver refused to stop and fled for several blocks, deliberately striking an Albion patrol vehicle during the pursuit.

Authorities say the suspect eventually stopped the vehicle and ran on foot while reportedly holding a handgun. Officers say he entered a home in the 500 block of West Erie Street. A family member attempted to get him to leave, but was unsuccessful.

Because of reports the suspect was armed, the Calhoun County Special Response Team responded. A search warrant was obtained, and officers located the suspect hiding in a camper on the property. He was taken into custody without further incident. Police say no firearm was recovered.

The suspect was lodged in the Calhoun County Jail on charges including fleeing and eluding, assault on a police officer with a motor vehicle, malicious destruction of police property, resisting and obstructing police, reckless driving, and driving on a revoked license.

The Albion Department of Public Safety was assisted by the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, the Marshall Police Department, the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi Police Department, Albion Community Ambulance, and Calhoun County Consolidated Dispatch.
