TECUMSEH — Tecumseh Public Schools is considering a preschool shift to a grant-funded Great Start Readiness Program model, replacing one tuition-based preschool classroom.
The recommendation was presented during the district’s Budget Committee report at Monday’s Board of Education meeting. Superintendent Matthew Hilton said the change would convert the current tuition preschool classroom into a Great Start Readiness Program, or GSRP, classroom beginning next school year.
Hilton said many district families qualify for the state-funded GSRP program, which provides preschool services at no cost to eligible households. He noted the tuition-based preschool model has historically cost the district money, while GSRP classrooms operate through grant funding administered in partnership with the Lenawee Intermediate School District.
The item was discussed as part of the February 16 Budget Committee meeting report and does not eliminate preschool programming. Instead, it adjusts the funding structure for one classroom.
The board did not take final action Monday night. Additional discussion and potential action could come at a future meeting as budget planning continues for the 2026-27 school year.
