TECUMSEH — Tecumseh Public Schools reviewed AP vs. dual enrollment performance and cost data on Monday, showing stronger SAT growth and lower per-student costs for in-district Advanced Placement courses.

The data was presented during a Board of Education meeting as administrators evaluated rising dual enrollment expenses and academic outcomes. High School Principal Megan Way said district staff analyzed testing results dating back to 2022 to compare student growth.

Students taking English courses in the building averaged a 59-point increase on the SAT from 10th to 11th grade. Students taking dual enrollment English online averaged a 25-point increase during the same period.

Administrators also reviewed cost differences. Dual enrollment courses cost the district approximately $1,600 per student per class. In-district AP instruction averages about $550 per student based on staffing and enrollment figures.

Way said the district will clarify its written process to ensure dual enrollment selections align with state guidance. Under Michigan policy, students are generally expected to take equivalent in-district courses unless a scheduling conflict exists.

The review does not eliminate dual enrollment, but officials said clearer guidelines will help ensure students select the most academically and financially appropriate option.

Further updates are expected as the counseling staff finalizes scheduling for the next school year.
