Farm security plan advances with new oversight

WASHINGTON — The National Farm Security Action Plan is entering a new phase, and federal officials say it will increase oversight of farmland ownership and agricultural research.

For most farmers in Lenawee County, day-to-day operations would not change. However, the plan strengthens reporting requirements under the Agricultural Foreign Investment Disclosure Act.

That means farms with foreign ownership interests could face updated filing rules and additional compliance checks.

The USDA is also partnering with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency to address cybersecurity and biosecurity risks in agriculture.

Officials say the goal is to protect farmland, supply chains and research systems.

At this stage, no new production limits have been announced, but further rulemaking could clarify additional requirements.
