Doris Jean Frye, age 89, of Palmyra, Michigan, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 6, 2026, at the Hospice of Lenawee Home surrounded by the love of her family.
Doris was born at home in Blissfield Township on June 6, 1936, the daughter of Hubert “Vern” and Bernice (Baker) Isley. She was the youngest child in the family. Doris graduated from Blissfield High School in 1954 and went on to attend County Normal School at Adrian College for teaching. She taught the Leroy one room school house in Palmyra where she taught grades kindergarten through 8th grade before taking taking on her beloved role of farmer’s wife and mother.
On August 3, 1957 Doris married James Frye and they have been blessed with 68 years together. They embraced raising their two daughters and earned the precious title of grandparents. Later in life, Doris and James started spending their winters in Florida to get away from the snow and cold weather in Michigan. During their 19 years as snowbirds, they made wonderful memories with family and friends in the Sunshine State.
Doris was a longtime member of Wellsville United Methodist Church and later, Raisin Center Friends Church where she played the organ and piano. A devoted Christian, Doris studied her Bible daily and lived a faith-filled life. She was a wonderful pianist and provided piano lessons to many students over the years. Doris had a beautiful voice and shared this talent at countless weddings and funerals. She was an animal lover with mini horses being one of her favorites. Decorating for the Christmas season brought Doris great joy and many traditions were shared with the family.
In addition to her husband, James, Doris is survived by their daughters, Tamara (Ken Hindes) Frye and Wendy (Mike) Henderson; grandchildren, Katheryn (Nate) Lee, Sarah (Gabe) King, Seth (Miki) Wass, Clay MacGregor and Ember Henderson; and great-grandchildren, Hadley and Landry King, Xander and Maverick Lee and Elli. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Donald Isley, and an infant son, Chris Frye.
