LANSING — State Rep. William Bruck, who represents Monroe and Lenawee Counties, testified last week before the Michigan House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure on a wide-ranging proposal aimed at strengthening drone safety statewide.

The plan, known as S.H.I.E.L.D. Michigan, is a 14-bill package focused on protecting critical infrastructure, improving public safety response, and setting clearer rules for drone management and mobility.

Bruck told lawmakers the proposal is intended as an early framework for how Michigan handles both drone innovation and drone risk, as access to the technology continues to expand. The package follows more than a year of work with industry representatives, public safety officials, and other stakeholders.

It includes provisions to strengthen protections for sensitive facilities, expand enforcement tools for first responders, and set standards to reduce potential foreign threats. Supporters say the plan is designed to balance safety with continued growth in the drone industry.

The S.H.I.E.L.D. Michigan package is expected to continue moving through the legislative process in the coming weeks.
