LANSING — State Senator Joseph Bellino voted Thursday in support of bipartisan legislation aimed at strengthening enforcement against spam telemarketers and scam robocalls in Michigan.

The package would set clearer rules for telephone solicitors and expand enforcement authority for the Michigan attorney general.

The legislation would prohibit telemarketers from blocking caller ID or using misleading names, phone numbers, or area codes. It also strengthens investigative tools and allows the attorney general to pursue civil action for violations.

Under the bills, companies that target vulnerable residents, including seniors, could face penalties and fines of up to seventy-five thousand dollars.

Supporters say the measures are designed to address growing consumer complaints and reduce fraudulent calls targeting Michigan households.

The legislation now heads to the Michigan House of Representatives for further consideration.
