LANSING — The Michigan Senate has adopted a resolution recognizing Catholic Schools Week across the state.
The resolution, sponsored by state Sen. Joseph Bellino of Monroe, designates Jan. 25 through Jan. 31 as Catholic Schools Week in Michigan.
According to the resolution, more than 50,000 students attend over 200 Catholic elementary and high schools statewide. Lawmakers cited the role those schools play in providing values-based education and supporting students’ academic, moral, and social development.
The measure also notes that Catholic schools serve students from diverse backgrounds, including non-Catholic and economically disadvantaged families, while complying with the same health and safety regulations required of public schools.
The resolution highlights that Catholic school families pay tuition while also supporting public education through taxes, resulting in significant savings to the state’s education system.
The Senate formally recognized Catholic Schools Week as a way to acknowledge the contribution of Catholic schools to Michigan communities and the state’s overall educational landscape.
