ONSTED — A school-affiliated officer and crosswalk guard is recovering after being struck by a vehicle near a school intersection in Onsted.
School officials say the incident could have been far more serious, but the officer is doing well and remains committed to student safety.
In the wake of the incident, the district and local officials reviewed visibility concerns at the intersection. Obstructions near a roadside sign and an electronic display that limited sightlines, particularly when looking south, have been removed.
Officials say additional safety improvements near the intersection are now being evaluated.
The incident has renewed attention on traffic safety in school zones and highlighted the role of crossing guards and officers who work daily to protect students during arrival and dismissal.
District leaders say they will continue to assess roadway conditions and take steps to improve visibility and safety near school crossings.
