LENAWEE CO. — Extreme cold expected this weekend in Lenawee County, with health officials urging residents to take precautions.

The Lenawee County Health Department says the coldest temperatures of the winter season are expected from Thursday night through Sunday morning, as a powerful arctic air mass moves into Michigan.

According to the National Weather Service, wind chills in southern Michigan could make it feel between 5 and 20 degrees below zero, with overnight lows potentially dipping below zero.

Health officials warn that frostbite can occur in as little as 30 minutes on exposed skin, and hypothermia is a serious risk during prolonged exposure. Emergency departments across the state are already seeing an increase in cold-related visits.

Residents are encouraged to stay indoors when possible, dress in layers, limit time outside, and check on older adults, neighbors, and anyone without reliable heat. Pets should be brought indoors, and space heaters should be used safely.

Warming centers are available throughout the county, including public libraries and senior centers during normal hours. Share the Warmth of Lenawee in Adrian will operate as a 24-hour emergency cold weather shelter beginning Friday morning.
