TECUMSEH — The Tecumseh Public Schools Board is considering a new Careers in Data Science course, marking a shift in how the district approaches upper-level math and career preparation.
The course was introduced Monday during the Board of Education meeting and would count as a fourth-year math credit for high school students. District administrators said the class is designed to move beyond traditional math-only options and align more closely with workforce skills.
The proposed curriculum includes instruction in Python programming, Excel, Jupyter Notebook and data analysis concepts connected to artificial intelligence. Administrators also pointed to state workforce data showing data science jobs in Michigan are projected to grow by about 35 percent.
Board members discussed how the course could complement or compete with dual enrollment and whether certifications could eventually be offered. Questions were also raised about student access and how the district will ensure the course is more than just AI buzzwords.
The proposal is expected to return for a vote later this month.
