WASHINGTON — The December jobs report shows continued job growth in the U.S., but at a slower pace than earlier in the year.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employers added about 50,000 jobs nationwide in December. The unemployment rate edged down to 4.4%.

Data shows most job gains came in health care, food services, and social assistance, while employment was flat or declined in sectors such as retail trade and manufacturing. Wage growth continued, rising just under 4% over the past year.

The report also confirms that overall job growth in 2025 was significantly lower than in 2024, reflecting a cooling labor market rather than rapid expansion.

In response to the report, Education and Workforce Committee Chairman Tim Walberg said the data shows continued economic improvement and cited Republican policies as supporting job creators and workers. Walberg also acknowledged that costs remain a concern for working families.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics will release its next employment report in early February.
