LANSING — Michigan State Police motor carrier officers are taking part in a nationwide human trafficking awareness effort this month.

January is National Human Trafficking Awareness Month, and from January 12 through January 16, MSP officers will join law enforcement agencies across the country, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, and Truckers Against Trafficking.

The initiative focuses on educating truck drivers and others in the transportation industry about recognizing signs of human trafficking, while also enforcing laws targeting traffickers.

Motor carrier officers will conduct outreach at truck stops and provide education to trucking companies, advocacy groups, and civic and religious organizations.

The effort is designed to reach people who may encounter trafficking activity, including commercial drivers, rest area attendants, truck stop employees, and motorists.

Michigan State Police first partnered with Truckers Against Trafficking in 2015 and is recognized nationally for its awareness and education work.

Suspected human trafficking can be reported to the National Human Trafficking Resource Center at 888-373-7888 or by texting BeFree to 233733.
