ADRIAN — The City of Adrian is providing background on the South Main Street pedestrian tunnel project as construction is set to begin Monday, January 12.
City officials say the tunnel reflects a series of actions approved by the Adrian City Commission over multiple years through established public processes, with construction marking the final administrative step.
Property acquisitions along South Main Street were authorized beginning in 2022, followed by demolition, environmental work, and engineering and planning services in 2023 and 2024. The city also entered into a maintenance and operation agreement with the Michigan Department of Transportation, establishing long-term maintenance responsibilities.
Construction costs are funded through state and federal sources, including a MEDC Enhancement Grant administered by Lenawee Now. No city general fund dollars are being used.
Traffic impacts will include lane shifts over the next month, a one-week full closure expected in April, and phased lane reductions through completion.
The project is expected to be finished by Labor Day 2026.
