FENTON — A former Michigan volunteer firefighter is being recognized for continued service to his community more than two decades after a life-changing injury, according to MLive.
David Dunville, a cashier at VG’s Grocery in Fenton, received the 2025 SpartanNash Circle of Excellence award earlier this year for his charitable work and customer service. SpartanNash owns VG’s Grocery and presents the national award to employees who go above and beyond.
Dunville lost one of his legs following a 1999 structure collapse while serving as a volunteer firefighter in Hartland. After multiple surgeries, his leg was amputated in 2003.
Despite the setback, Dunville remains active in community service, supporting fellow amputees through the Amputee Coalition and helping organize veterans events, including Wreaths Across America at Great Lakes National Cemetery.
SpartanNash officials say Dunville has raised nearly $8,000 for charitable causes over the past three years and donated personal rewards to local food pantries.
Dunville continues to work, volunteer, and advocate, saying giving back is essential to strengthening the community.
