LANSING — Across Michigan, the holiday season brings celebration, but also added stress tied to tight budgets, packed schedules and caregiving responsibilities.

Health experts say nearly half of U.S. adults report higher stress during the holidays, according to data from the American Psychological Association. Physicians warn that emotional strain can affect both mental and physical health.

Dr. Ravi Johar with the American Heart Association says one of the first habits people neglect during the holidays is sleep. He recommends seven to eight hours per night, along with rest breaks during the day when possible.

Johar also advises setting boundaries, including saying no to overbooked schedules, and staying connected to people who provide emotional support, especially for those coping with loss.

Experts say moderation with holiday treats is encouraged, and the season should focus on gratitude, balance and meaningful connection.
