LANSING — Michigan transit agencies will receive $133 million in state and federal grants to purchase new buses and upgrade transit facilities, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.

The funding comes from the Federal Transit Administration’s Low or No Emission Grant Program and the Grants for Buses and Bus Facilities Program, with required matching funds provided by the state.

MDOT says the grants will help modernize transit fleets, reduce emissions, and improve reliability and affordability for riders across Michigan.

Agencies receiving funding include transit systems in Jackson, Kalamazoo, Lansing, Wexford County, and metro Detroit, with awards supporting new hybrid, propane, and compressed natural gas buses, as well as facility improvements.

State officials say Michigan is able to cover the full local match required by federal law, reducing costs for transit agencies and improving access to competitive federal funding.

The projects will move forward as agencies finalize vehicle purchases and facility upgrades.
