LANSING — Multi-sport participation among Michigan high school athletes continues to rise, according to a new survey from the Michigan High School Athletic Association.
The association’s seventh annual Multi-Sport Participation Survey shows 45.4% of student-athletes played two or more sports during the 2024–25 school year. That marks a small but steady increase from the previous year and continues an upward trend that has grown more than two-and-a-half percent since the study began.
The survey was created to address concerns over early sport specialization, which has been linked to overuse injuries and athlete burnout.
Results show nearly half of male athletes and just over 42% of female athletes participated in multiple sports. Smaller schools reported the highest rates, with Class D schools leading the state.
Several schools were again recognized for consistently exceeding participation averages across multiple years.
