LANSING — The Michigan Department of Transportation has announced the recipients of its 2026 Local Grade Crossing Surface Program, awarding grants for highway-railroad crossing repairs across the state.

MDOT selected 32 projects for funding as part of its ongoing effort to improve transportation safety and ride quality at railroad crossings.

The work ranges from minor asphalt repairs to full replacement of track and surface materials at crossings where roads and rail lines intersect.

MDOT officials say the program helps ensure safer, smoother crossings for drivers while reducing long-term maintenance issues.

The program provides 60% of the funding for eligible projects, with railroads covering the remaining 40% of the cost.

All construction work will be performed by railroad companies and their contractors, while local road agencies will assist with detours and coordination.

MDOT says the railroad companies and local agencies are jointly responsible for scheduling construction.
