WASHINGTON — Congressman Tim Walberg has voted in favor of legislation aimed at speeding up the federal permitting process for major energy and infrastructure projects.

Walberg supported the Standardizing Permitting and Expediting Economic Development, or SPEED Act, during a vote in Washington this week.

The bill is designed to shorten approval timelines, limit what supporters describe as frivolous lawsuits, and narrow the scope of federal environmental reviews under the National Environmental Policy Act.

Walberg said the goal of the legislation is to encourage construction of critical energy infrastructure while boosting economic development.

Walberg serves on the U.S. House Committee on Natural Resources and previously voted to advance the bill out of committee earlier this year.

The SPEED Act now moves forward in the legislative process for further consideration.
