JACKSON — A Jackson native is serving aboard one of the world’s largest U.S. Navy warships.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Zachary McConeghy, a native of Jackson, is currently stationed aboard the USS George H.W. Bush, a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier homeported in Norfolk, Virginia.

McConeghy graduated from Vandercook Lake High School in 2018 and joined the Navy seven years ago. He now serves as a hospital corpsman, providing medical care to sailors aboard the carrier.

The Navy says skills developed through hands-on education and technical training help sailors adapt to the demanding environment aboard aircraft carriers, which function as mobile air bases at sea.

The USS George H.W. Bush is more than three football fields long, weighs over 100,000 tons and carries a crew of more than 5,000 sailors.

The aircraft carrier is named after the 41st president of the United States and plays a key role in global naval operations.

The U.S. Navy is marking its 250th anniversary this year.
