Marjorie was born on August 15, 1924, in Adrian, Michigan, the only child of William Herman and Christiane (Germeroth) Matthes. After graduating from Adrian High School, Marjorie went on to attend Valparaiso University in Indiana, earning a degree in business.
It was during college that Marjorie met her future husband, Joseph “JB” Chambers. They were united in marriage on March 23, 1946, at St. John’s Lutheran Church Adrian. During their 60 years together, they raised four children and enjoyed vacationing in Michigan’s upper peninsula at the family cottage. Later in life, they became snowbirds spending their winters in Cocoa Beach, Florida. JB preceded her in death in 2006.
Marjorie started her working career later in life and felt the calling to go into education. Going back to college to get her teaching certification, Marjorie went on to teach 24 years at Prairie and Lincoln Elementary Schools. During her tenure, she touched the lives of hundreds of children and made a lasting impression on both students and faculty.
She liked to be involved in her community and dedicated time and energy to be active in the Adrian Garden Club, Delta Kappa Gamma and the American Association for University Women (AAUW). Marjorie was a lifelong member of St. John’s Lutheran Church where she was a part of the Tabea Society and shared her voice singing in the choir when she was younger.
Marjorie will be missed by her children, Karen Stahler, David (Thea) Chambers and Mark (Sarah) Chambers; grandchildren, Lisa (Gary) Hughes, Laura McRitchie, Kathrin (Lance) Richards, Rebecca (Galit Kaunitz) Chambers and Megan (Eric) Simonson; and great-grandchildren, Noah, Paige, Hannah, Lauren, Jack, Sage, Arlo, and Levi. In addition to her husband, JB, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Kathryn “Anne” Chambers, and grandson, Joel Chambers.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 22, 2025, at 12:00 P.M. at St. John’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Joel Sarrault officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the start of services in the church. Burial to follow at Oakwood Cemetery.
