ADRIAN — The Lenawee County Health Department is reminding residents to keep heart health in mind during the holiday season, when cardiovascular risks tend to rise.

Health officials say heart attacks are more common in winter months, especially around the holidays. Cold weather can constrict blood vessels, while high-sodium meals, rich foods, and added stress can raise blood pressure and strain the heart.

The department encourages moderation at holiday meals, including smaller portions of high-fat foods and filling plates with fruits and vegetables. Officials also urge residents to be mindful of alcohol intake, noting that excessive drinking can trigger irregular heart rhythms, even in otherwise healthy adults.

Regular physical activity remains important during colder months. Health experts recommend at least 30 minutes of moderate activity most days, including walking, dancing, or other movement that fits into daily routines.

Managing stress is also key. Adequate sleep, short breaks for relaxation, and spending time with supportive people can help reduce cardiovascular strain.

The health department says balanced habits can help residents enjoy the holidays while protecting their hearts.
