KANEOHE BAY — The Lenawee County Young Marines traveled to Hawaii this past week to honor the 84th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

The Adrian-based unit was one of 24 Young Marines units from across the country selected to participate in official remembrance ceremonies held on the island of Oahu.

During the visit, the youth members took part in multiple commemorative and service events, including a community beach cleanup at Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe Bay and a wreath-laying ceremony at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, known as the Punchbowl.

A highlight of the trip came on December 7, when Young Marines from around the nation led the Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade, serving as the color guard and carrying banners representing each of the 12 capital ships attacked in 1941.

The Young Marines program is a national youth organization that promotes leadership, teamwork, and a drug-free lifestyle for boys and girls ages eight through high school graduation.
