LENAWEE CO. — Michigan parents are expressing new concerns about kratom, an herbal product sold in gas stations and online that remains legal in most states.

A nationwide survey of 3,003 respondents by Renaissance Recovery shows 55% of Michigan residents support banning the substance, compared to 43% nationally.

The product has been used by an estimated 1.7 million Americans.

The survey found that most Michiganders want tighter regulation, including age limits, warning labels, and sales restricted to locations not easily accessible to youth.

Researchers also reported that 73% of Michigan respondents support a minimum purchase age of 21, while 68% believe kratom should not be sold where children can see it. Nearly two-thirds said kratom could become the “next vaping” for teens.

Renaissance Recovery says the findings show growing public concern and a need for clearer statewide regulation.
