George C. Hawkins – Manitou Beach

George C. Hawkins, age 91, of Manitou Beach, Michigan, passed away November 30, 2025 at home in the company of his family. He was born June 4, 1934, in Macon, Michigan the son of Carl and Evelyn (Harden) Hawkins. On October 11, 1952, he married Donna M. Martin with whom he had three children.

George was proud of his early education, grades 1 thru 6 at Henry Ford School, Macon, Michigan. He was a graduate of Britton-Macon High School Class of 1952. George attended Spring Arbor College where he studied management of human resources. He also studied human resource management through the United States Postal Service and Michigan National Guard. George was retired from the US Postal Service with 38 years of service. He started his career in Tecumseh, Michigan on a walking route where he was known as “The Whistling Mailman.” George then became a rural mail carrier for Britton, Michigan, where also became the Postmaster. His career then expanded as he became Officer-in-Charge at Tecumseh Post Office and ultimately being promoted to Postmaster at the Adrian Post Office. During his postal career, he was a National Postmaster Representative, for the National Association of Postmasters, where he guided and advised other postmasters at the state and national level.

George was actively involved in the community where he started youth athletic programs in Britton, MI. He also kept the programs organized and ran them for 8 years.

George was enlisted in the Michigan Army National Guard for 42 years. He attained the highest rank possible, Command Sergeant Major, overseeing all the troops in Michigan.

George loved to hunt. He also loved fishing and boating on Devils Lake.

He is survived by his wife Lynda, of 38 years, daughter, Susan (Joe) Pikulski, son, Steve Hawkins; two grandchildren, Heather (Gregory) Logan and Rachel Pikulski, great granddaughter; Adeline; and two sisters, Judy Crittenden and Nancy Eldred.

He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Donna Hawkins; son David Hawkins, and sister, Betty Stotler.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 12, 2025 at Purse & Son Funeral Home, Tecumseh, Michigan with Pastor Joe Masinick officiating.

Interment will follow at Macon Cemetery with military honors performed by the United States Army.

Visitation will take place Thursday, December 11, 2025 at  Purse & Son Funeral Home, Tecumseh, Michigan from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. and one hour prior

to funeral service, Friday, at the funeral home.
